Each year in the lead up to Remembrance Day, South Australian school children and veterans place crosses on the lawns near the National War Memorial, building the RSL's 'Field of Remembrance'.
On Monday, this display of community remembrance for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice was vandalised. Some of the crosses planted in the field were even stolen.
On Tuesday night I informed the Senate of this pitiful act that has been especially distressing for those of us who have spent time in uniform serving our Nation.
I also took the opportunity to pay a personal tribute to those who fell in battle for our freedoms, as well as the families that had to cope with the inconsolable loss of losing their sons and daughters.
