Cory Bernardi’s replacement could make an early appearance in Canberra this week, boosting the government’s upper house numbers to 36 (out of 76). A ballot of around 300 South Australian
Liberal members selected moderate state MP Andrew McLachlan to fill the Senate vacancy. The 54-year-old is president of SA’s Legislative Council (upper house). He can’t take his federal seat until the state parliament endorses him, which may be as early as Wednesday.
