SA Legislative Council President Andrew McLachlan to replace Cory Bernardi | ABC News

ABC News

Andrew McLachlan has been chosen by the South Australian Liberal Party to replace Cory Bernardi in the Senate.

The moderate-backed candidate has been the President of the state’s Legislative Council since 2018, and beat two others vying for the position. Mr Bernardi defected
from the Liberal Party in 2017 to set up the Australian Conservatives, but formally quit Federal Parliament in January.

Andrew McLachlan today assured his colleagues he won’t be following in Mr Bernardi’s footsteps. “Well, as a new newly-minted senator, perhaps next week – I’m planning to avoid controversy, as you can understand, and just work hard.”

The vacancy in the South Australian Upper House left by Mr McLachlan will now be filled through a preselection process.
