President’s unusual move | The Advertiser

UPPER House President Andrew McLachlan has declared he will not attend any Liberal partyroom meetings to ensure he is seen as independent in the prestigious role.

Mr McLachlan said he was taking the unusual step — which is common practice in Federal Parliament — to ensure the Upper House crossbenchers maintained faith in his ability to rule fairly and independently.

“The Upper House is distinguished from the Lower House in that just under a quarter of the 22 MLCs are crossbenchers,” Mr McLachlan, left, said.

“Because of that high proportion of crossbenchers they need to have faith and confidence in the president to do their role independently.”
