Column - Freeing of flag apt for Australia Day | Adelaide Hills Herald

Senator for South Australia Andrew McLachlan CSC

As I arrived at my office early last Wednesday morning, I took a moment to consider how privileged I am to live in this great nation and in particular, the best state in the Federation, South Australia.

Each morning, my office’s first task is to hoist the Australian Flag up our flagpole. On January 26th I always make sure I am the one to have this honour.

Australia Day is a time for us to reflect on the story of our extraordinary nation, its history, its achievements and most importantly, its people.

This year was particularly significant, with the “freeing” of the Aboriginal Flag.

Following lengthy negotiations between the Federal Government and Harold Thomas, an arrangement was concluded to ensure Australians may freely use the Aboriginal Flag design in a variety of ways, including at sporting events.

The Aboriginal Flag will now be managed in the same way as the Australian National Flag, where its use is free, but it must always be presented in a respectful and dignified way.

As an enduring symbol of Aboriginal culture, I am very pleased that the flag is now available to be celebrated by all Australians.

The timing was perfect given Australia Day celebrations were upon us and this is an important moment in our nation’s recognition and celebration of Indigenous culture.

Australia Day is a time for us to come together and I hope you all had the opportunity to enjoy time with your loved ones.

Despite the additional challenges we have faced following the Omicron wave, South Australians have shown enormous strength and resilience.

I encourage you to continue to support local businesses and services where possible and keep up the strong Hills community spirit, which has served us so well during these challenging times.

As ever, if there is any way in which I can be of assistance please do not hesitate to get in contact with my office via 8362 8600 or senator.mclachlan@aph.gov.au
