State President of the Legislative Council Liberal member Andrew McLachlan has been endorsed by an overwhelming majority to replace controversial figure Cory Bernardi in the federal senate.
The 54-year-old says he has no plans to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, who defected from the Liberals to form his own party. “As a newly-minted senator, perhaps next week, I’m planning to avoid controversy, as you can understand, and just work hard.”
Mr McLachlan’s appointment is considered a win for moderate Liberals.
