SOUTH Australia’s newest Liberal senator will make his federal parliamentary debut today.

Former state Upper House president, Andrew McLachlan, will be sworn in to the federal Upper House this afternoon.

Mr McLachlan won the Senate vote by a large majority at the start of February, and remained in the chair of his old job until Wednesday.

A former army officer, Mr McLachlan, pictured, has maintained that he will continue to work extremely closely with his state counterparts to “advance the interests of the state”.

The Liberal senator, who replaces Cory Bernardi in the chamber, will also take his old office.

Mr McLachlan is due to make his maiden speech in coming weeks.
