$981,000 for drought resilience project on Kangaroo Island | Media Release

As part of the Drought Resilience Innovation Grants program, the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board (KILB) has been awarded $981,000 to carry out an important drought resilience project with local landholders.

The project is one of 46 nationally to share in $29 million of funding to deliver innovation in drought resilience through the Federal Government’s $5 billion Future Drought Fund.

Utilising the grant funding, the KILB will help develop drought resilience among Kangaroo Island landholders through comprehensive property management planning.

Senator for South Australia Andrew McLachlan CSC welcomed the funding and said the project will provide landholders with the capacity to adapt and prepare their properties in preparation for future  droughts.

“Adapting to a changing climate is a key concern among landholders in rural communities and I welcome this important Federal Government funding for Kangaroo Island,” Senator McLachlan said.

“This project endeavours to support landholders move from drought planning to actual implementation by utilising technological advancements and innovative approaches.

“It will also aid Kangaroo Island landholders to develop property-scale water security plans to prepare for future droughts.

“As we adapt to survive the effects of climate change, it is essential that these types of projects receive strong government support, to ensure primary producers and rural communities are best placed to deal with natural disasters and longer periods of drought.

“It is important that in our lives we respect on our natural environment and this project also prioritises making efficient use of natural resources. This is an important way in which we can be stewards of the  Earth for future generations.”

As part of the Drought Resilience Innovation Grants program, The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia also shared in more than $260,000 which will fund three projects in Mayo.

These projects will focus on crop insurance, bringing together farmers to foster wellbeing and optimising herd management strategies.
